Recent ProjectWaterfowl habitat across the Mississippi Delta has declined significantly over the past several decades due to changing agricultural practices and reduced habitat management capacity on public lands. Through a new partnership between Delta Wildlife and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, this project will restore and enhance critical wintering waterfowl habitat on the 1,204-acre Wilkins Tract in Sunflower County, Mississippi. Planned improvements include restoring impoundments, planting millet and rice for waterfowl forage, and installing an electric irrigation well to improve long-term water management. These efforts are expected to provide an additional 1.8 million duck energy days while increasing wintering waterfowl numbers and improving hunting and conservation opportunities throughout the Mississippi Delta.

Operating Area
Delta Wildlife was founded to serve the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta and adjacent Loess Bluffs of Northwest Mississippi because the region is set apart from the rest of the state by its soils, topography, habitats, land use, and hydrology.
For this reason, the organization’s by-laws restrict the organization from implementing projects outside of the service area. However, Delta Wildlife does provide technical assistance and informational resources to members who own land or reside outside of the organization’s operating area.
